ZWERG “Wretched Road“
From the LP The Centurion (Dead Daisy Records)

Alternative Rock / Industrial Pop / Dream Pop / Indie Pop-Rock

“The song ‘Wretched Road’ is very optimistic,” writes Eldon Thiele, the quirky musical creature also known as ZWERG. “It’s about grabbing whatever hellish bull you’ve been dealt today by the horns, and immediately ‘steer’-ing it (sorry) toward your idea of Shangri-la. It’s about attempting to transmute dystopia into your perception of utopia, in the moment.” ZWERG is referring to the theme of the opening track from his upcoming album The Centurion, to be released in late 2023 on Emm Gryner’s Dead Daisy Records. “I find myself suffering from what I term the ‘I’ll be happy whens’ - this feeling that I’ll only ever be happy in the future when whatever current muck I find myself in is washed off. Well, perhaps there’s always going to be a little muck on our boots in this existence - so let’s allow ourselves to be happy here and now. I have my health, I have an incredible boyfriend, I have a loving family. What more could I possibly ask for?”
Sonically, the track is a seemingly incongruous fusion of piano pop, danceable industrial beats, and dream pop vocals. In-Flight Safety’s John Mullane also infuses heavy, distorted alt-rock guitars to the motley mix. “I live for unlikely collaborations and creative rule-breaking; the unification of seemingly incohesive elements is exciting - it mirrors how I feel about the unification of people, the embracing of diversity and dimorphism. It took open-minded, out-of-the-box thinkers and musical iconoclasts to create all the genres of music we enjoy today. The challenge is to take very diverse ingredients and make something that works - a sumptuous sonic soup.”

lyrics

He said “Don’t give up on me
I ain’t done just yet
I’ll establish my gentility
I’ll pay off every debt”

Well spare him all that rot
‘Cause he ain’t doin’ no crime
Give him another shot
He’ll get it right this time

He’ll take the wretched road
He’ll take the wretched road
And turn it all around
All around
He’ll break another code
With fewer episodes
His feet are on the ground
On the ground

You’ve always got a case
Of the “I’ll be happy whens”
But this could be your happy place
You’ll get your recompense

Well spare you all that rot
‘Cause you ain’t done no crime
We’ll give you another shot
You’ll get it right this time

He took the wretched road
He took the wretched road
And turned it all around
All around
He broke another code
With fewer episodes
His feet are on the ground
On the ground

Are things always resultant?
Must there always be strife?
He is finally solvent
And livin’ up his life

I took the wretched road
I took the wretched road
And turned it all around
Underground
I broke another code
When Timmy took a load
My feet are on the ground
Underground
